Frederick Douglas uses metaphors in this chapter such as <em>“…and thereby run the hazard of closing the slightest avenue by which a brother slave might clear himself of the chains and fetters of slavery”</em> to tell the reader that enslavement is not just a restriction of liberty of one’s body but also the restriction of one’s soul.
