Think about the portrayal of people with mental health problems in movies and television shows. What message do shows give about
the level of danger posed by people with psychological disorders? How do you think these messages might potentially affect juries or trials of suspects with mental health problems?
Studies consistently show that both entertainment and news media provide overwhelmingly dramatic and distorted images of mental illness that emphasise dangerousness, criminality and unpredictability. They also model negative reactions to the mentally ill, including fear, rejection, derision and ridicule.
