“‘You call yourself poor, my friend; you never were so rich,—you never knew the boundless treasures of excellence you possessed in that woman.’”

“Her gay spirits might revolt at the dark, downward path of low humility suddenly pointed out before her.”

“A bright beautiful face glanced out at the window, and vanished—a light footstep was heard—and Mary came tripping forth to meet us.”

“I have often noticed the mute rapture with which he would gaze upon her in company; and how, in the midst of applause, her eye would still turn to him, as if there alone she sought favor and acceptance.”

Write a 250 word easy in which you explain the relationship between the speaker and the mother in the poem. Be sure to cite exam
Westkost [7]

The narrator and main character often praises her late mother whom she admired and had a good relationship with. When the mom died she left the narrator a gold pin, the narrator often mentions how she'd rather have her mother's courage instead of a jewel no matter how precious it is.

In this story, once someone dies they pass on either human qualities or material stuff. Therefore the daughter is often frustrated because she believes her mom made the wrong choice when leaving her only a jewel when the courage she possesed is the quality she desires the most.

Hope this helps!
