Her speech talks of strength, independence, of students surpassing their masters. But, to her shock and disappointment, the narrator's father disapproves of the speech to the point of tearing it to pieces.

He is still afraid of speaking his mind, of talking too loud, of losing loved ones, of being taken into a black car and disappearing, even though they now live in America.
