By using the atomic bomb, the United States wanted to destroy Japan as soon as possible, as the fighting on land that was going on, even though it was successful, still it was slow and there were lot of casualties on the side of the United States and their allies. By eliminating Japan as a threat, the US forces would have been able to move to Europe and together with the Allies to finish off Germany, and so it was.
