camp administered by the SS (a Nazi police force/paramilitary organization founded by Hitler in 1925) during the Second World War. The following is based on Sufit's account of their arrival in Auschwitz. Understand the action being expressed then write C if the past form used in the statement is correct and I if it is incorrect. Underline the incorrect past form, then write the correct form on top.
1. After a long travel, Richard and his group had arrived at Birkenau and had witnessed their first "selection".
2. They didn't know what it meant at that time.
3. They were asked to form a line and as they approached the table, each were told to go to the right side, left side, right side, left side.
4. An hour later, they left the station and arrived in the camp by the main entrance.
5. They had walked across the entire camp until they arrived on a huge open area where they had to wait.
6. While they were waiting, they recognized some prisoners in the camp. 7. Some were approaching them and were telling them what was happening in the camp, careful not to tell a lot but just enough for them to understand.
8. After a while, they were asked to remove all their clothes and to stand naked in the open air, stripping them of the vestiges of human dignity.
9. Armed with only their shoes which they were carrying, all of them were asked to enter an enormous room.
10. They thought they were going to die. Fortunately, only water came out of the valves.
11. Without towel and soap, they were taking their bath.
12. They were leaving the shower by another door out into an open area where they stood totally naked. They waited for the wind and the sun to dry them. 69
13. later, they were given striped clothes. but they were not given food to eat and everybody was hungry.
14. they were placed in huge tents big enough for 200 to 300 prisoners
15. they were then give soup and instruction not to leave the tent
16. they learned they were in Auschwitz when a veteran prisoner told them
17. they stood waiting for 28 hours before they were tattooed a number on their left arm
18. at this moment, a veteran told them that they were very lucky because they were going to survive.
