George gets into a long conversation with Mr. Wilson and the topic they are speaking on is his "country". This leads into the metaphor, "What country have I, but the grave?George tells his belief that the slave is without a country. His only true home is his final resting place after hie dies. The emotion that George reveals is empathy. The grave metaphor is used to illustrate the idea that he won't be truly free until he has died and that the only American soil that can be considered free for African Americans is the soil of their graves.
