Throughout its history, Ukraine was dominated by the Mongols, Lithuanians, and Polish, these rule had differences and similarities.
During the Mongol rule (1237 - 1472) there were no very important changes because the Mongols conquered the territory but did not impose cultural or religious customs on the native inhabitants of this area. On the contrary, they respected the customs that existed there.

That caused a division between the upper classes and Ruthenians, because upper classes assumed polonization, while the Ruthenians maintained their ancestral cultural customs.
