Why is it said the beatitudes promote values that are in direct contrast to what the world promote?

English

Answer

It is because world values promote the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the arrogance of life, selfishness, and seeking material gain. These values contradict the teachings of Christ Jesus of becoming humble, selfless, and seekers of God and His righteousness.

Explanation

For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure (lust of the flesh), a craving for everything we see (lust of the eyes), and pride in our achievements and possessions (the arrogance of life). These are not from the Father but are from this world.

Matthew 5:3-11 (NLT)

The Beatitudes

3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him (poor in spirit) for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

4 God blesses those who mourn,

  for they will be comforted.

5 God blesses those who are humble,

for they will inherit the whole earth.

6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,

  for they will be satisfied.

7 God blesses those who are merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure,

  for they will see God.

9 God blesses those who work for peace,

for they will be called the children of God.

10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right,

for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

*Read the story*<br> Q: What does this show us about being human?
Nonamiya [84]

Answer:

This story shows us that humans are messed up and broken, but even in the most broken of states, our humanity can shine through. The narrator is broken down and in a bad place, but still feels remorse about the state he's left his kids in. This person celebrates that one of their daughters is doing alright, but they don't want to mess things up for her by moving in with her. Their humanity and love for their children is shown in this, even though they're all messed up.
