5. The author uses irony in some ways which kind of contributes to the story. When the father is counting on his son to pass the test he fails and all isn't really good. He expresses irony in a way that shows that the dad is disappointed in his son when he thought or knew he was going to pass. The author expresses in his sentences the way he described the father as not really sympathetic or caring and a "knowing you can do it" person. The meaning of the story has something to do with giving in sympathy and passion for your child and good parenting skills and never estimate of how far a person/child could do.
