If a student is facing such a difficulty, the student should be explained the plus sign with symbol + with writing add, addition, plus words which explains the meanings of that sign and same should be done while explaining the minus sign - subtract, minus, less.

The plus sign (+) itself joins two lines together which can be associated as addition of the two lines.

While the minus sign (-) itself shows the cutting of something.
