The plantation is run by the Master, Overseer, and Driver. They are violent men who beat the slaves, and when the Driver notices that Sarah's baby is starting to cry, he beats the baby. Toby, another slave working the fields, runs over to Sarah and whispers into her ear: Kum ... yali, kum buba tambe.
