A poll tax was a sum of money required to vote. This greatly affected African- Americans especially during the 1800’s because many of them did not have a lot of paper money due to their previous status as slaves. The literacy tests were extremely difficult reading comprehension tests that African-Americans usually failed during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This was due to the fact that schooling was limited for this group of people.
