Answer:

I sort-of-met-briefly Stephen Hawking in 1995 in England. That summer, I was doing some manuscript work as part of my M.A. research, and I was in England along with a couple other graduate students in my English Department.

While we were doing the tourist thing, we saw Hawking. He was traveling across campus with an assistant. We were immediately star-struck, and we didn’t want to be annoying by bothering him, but we did really want to meet him.

We decided we would invite him to tea, so we approached him and made our invitation.

He declined, and the assistant promptly shooed us away. The entire exchange lasted less than 12 seconds, I think.

In any case, I felt thrilled to be in the same space as this celebrity, but a little disappointed we didn’t get an actual conversation.
