His writing in this pamphlet was, in fact, successful in persuading his audience for a plethora of reasons. The first reason is that he made use of strong figurative languages such as vivid imagery and personification. By using this figurative language, Thomas Paine was able to encourage and invigorate his audience as well as unify them under a common cause. Although many people prior to the publishing of Paine's American Crisis pamphlet had wanted to achieve independence for the country, they were timid and feared standing up for what they believed in. However, America was still split between those who had wanted to fight for freedom and those who were yet loyal to Britain, opposing the idea of independence. Others had known that they were under the control of Britain, and they felt hopeless when it came to gaining freedom. Thomas Paine's American Crisis helped to boost their morale and gain many supporters for the cause for freedom.
