A historical perspective that one can pick up from the cartoon is that there were those who were <u>opposed </u><u>to the </u><u>spread </u><u>of </u><u>slavery </u><u>into the </u><u>territories</u><u>. </u>

The cartoon is about Martin Van Buren, and his son, John who were:

  • Opposed to slavery in the territories
  • Of the opinion that to remove corruption, the entire system had to be uprooted
  • Against the election of Lewis Cass as President

The cartoon is that of a barn being burnt because there was a view in the past that the only way to remove a rat infestation was to burn the barn to the ground.

The rat infestation in this scenario was the corruption and drive to spread slavery to the territories and Van Buren was against that.

In conclusion, the burning of the barn symbolized opposition to the spread of slavery in the territories.
