Tension is created in a text when there is a conflict between two opposing forces. The author created tension in the text "Soap and Water"

In this text by Anzia Yezierska, we learn of a certain dean of studies named Miss Whiteside who constantly attacked a young girl that barely got into college through sheer will.

She criticized the girl's physical appearance, constantly describing her as unclean. This made the girl develop hatred towards her.

So, tension was created by highlighting the cruelty Miss Whiteside displays toward the narrator.
