Nationalism simply means the promotion of the interests of a country with the aim of maintaining sovereignty over its homeland. According to Ms. MacMillan, Hitler didn't wage war because of the Treaty of Versailles, even though he found its existence a godsend for his propaganda.

Ms. MacMillan believed that his intentions were pure as he couldn't foresee the future and couldn't control it. She stated that the war was a result of twenty years of decisions that weren't made.

Ms. MacMillan illustrated that the reparations that were demanded of Germany were even less than those paid by France after the country was defeated in the Franco-Prussian war.
