Many things can be made in the field and laboratory, but I think that the safest answer is "observation" - observation is what is usually done in the field, where one does not have the possibility for experiments, or only rarely so. In Dante's Divine Comedy (specifically the Inferno), it is harpies that torture people who chose to commit suicide. The people who committed suicide are stuck in trees in a forest and tortured by the harpies. This is supposedly a punishment for having taken their own life, as they instead face eternal torture rather than eternal life.
