The imperfect form is <u><em>used when the </em></u><u><em>time</em></u><u><em> in which the events occur is not </em></u><u><em>specified</em></u> and the preterite is used when information about that moment is given.

<em>Imperfect</em><em> and </em><em>Preterite Tense</em><em> in </em><em>Spanish</em><em>.</em>

The imperfect form of the past tense <u><em>is usually used when the </em></u><u><em>exact time</em></u><u><em> in which the action occurs is too </em></u><u><em>vague</em></u><u><em> or broad</em></u>, therefore, it is not considered specified, as shown below:

  • Cuando yo <u>era</u> niño, <u>vivía</u> en una casa pequeña.

For its part, the preterite tense usually refers to events whose time span is better defined and shorter, as shown in the following sentence:

  • <u>Hace tres días</u>, <u>fui</u> a comprar tomates al supermercado.

For this reason, the use of one verbal form or another depends largely on the definition or clarification of the time in which the actions occur.
