Read the following sentence from “The Gift if the Magi” by O. Henry. What is the meaning of the word sterling?
svet-max [94.6K]

Answer

Sterling means of great value.

Explanation

First of all, it seems that answer choice A, C, and D are similar, leaving B the outlier. If you picked A, C and D would be viable answers as well. The same thing applies if you picked C or D.

Another way you could have figured this out is with the context in the sentence. She wanted to give Jim something fine and rare, which are synonyms for of great value.

Read this excerpt from chapter 2 of The Scarlet Letter using comprehension strategies. “Goodwives,” said a hard-featured dame of
ololo11 [35]
A. The speaker is saying that she and her peers should be allowed to handle the punishments for people like Hester Prynne. She thinks this because they would band together as a group and be all on the same page in their punishment, rather than leaving it up to the magistrate--whose punishment she does not think adequately fit the crime Hester committed.

What causes Johnny and PonyBoy to come back to face the police? (The Outsiders)
alina1380 [7]
I said we're goin' back and turn ourselves in," Johnny repeated in a quiet voice. I was surprised but not shocked. I had thought about turning ourselves in lots of times, but apparently the whole idea was a jolt to Dallas. "I got a good chance of bein' let off easy," Johnny said desperately, and I didn't know if it was Dally he was trying to convince or himself. "I ain't got no record with the fuzz and it was self-defense. Ponyboy and Cherry can testify to that. And I don't aim to stay in that church all my life."

Summary: johnny wanted to turn himself in and tell the police that it was self defense. Besides, he didnt wanna stay in church forever.
