Its more work to haul goods over the mountains such as the Himalayas rather than to simply travel by sea where the Geographical structures could not be such an obstacle
i think because of slavery the northerners were far more advanced than the southerners plus the north was more populated and had more job opportunities vs the south i hope this helped
