Answer:

d

Explanation:

The central concern of Lord of the Flies is the conflict between two competing impulses that exist within all human beings: the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group against the instinct to gratify one’s immediate desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will. This conflict might be expressed in a number of ways: civilization vs. savagery, order vs. chaos, reason vs. impulse, law vs. anarchy, or the broader heading of good vs. evil. Throughout the novel, Golding associates the instinct of civilization with good and the instinct of savagery with evil. The conflict between the two instincts is the driving force of the novel, explored through the dissolution of the young English boys’ civilized, moral, disciplined behavior as they accustom themselves to a wild, brutal, barbaric life in the jungle.

Which revision of the first sentence follows the style guide and best retains the clarity of the original?
xxTIMURxx [149]

Choice A:  We conducted a survey of those in the immediate area and asked which type of notary stamp each liked best.

Essentially, the only thing that differentiates Choice A from the rest, is it's pronoun used.

In the original, the pronoun phrase used in relation to the adjective "those," was "he or she."

From this we can infer that Choice B is out of the question since it only states "she."

Choice C, though a tempting choice, is incorrect since the word "they" isn't inclusive enough.

Choice D is erroneous because it does not provide more clarity than the original. In fact, it doesn't even seem like a revision since the two pronouns were joined by a forward slash.

Explanation:

They were as much astonished to see Indians produce works of art with the aid or rude apparatus they themselves has discarded long ago, as a Hindu would be to see a chimpanzee officiating as a priest in a funeral ceremony and reading out Sanskirt texts from a plam leaf book spread before him.
