Why were Texas Longhorns chosen over other breeds for cattle drives?
maria [59]
There's one thing that EVERYBODY failed to mention here as to the REAL reason why TL's were "chosen" over other breeds: because they were the ONLY breed available in such large numbers to even be "used" for cattle drives!! They were NOT chosen over other breeds, they were the only type of cattle or "breed" available at that time. All the other breeds in New England were in far too small of numbers to be considered worthy and were only found in New England, not the Western and Southern portion of the United States!

THAT is why TLs were "used" for cattle drives. They were the only available stock that could be shipped north and east to meet the outcry demand for beef since the rest of the beef herd and nearly run dry during the Civil War.
