As World War II transformed both the United States and the USSR, turning the nations into formidable world powers, competition between the two increased. Following the defeat of the Axis powers, an ideological and political rivalry between the United States and the USSR gave way to the start of the Cold War.

It was different in the sense that the two main protagonists didn’t fight each other directly, but fought proxy wars in other nations. The Soviets aiding and arming one side, the US arming another side. It was a bit like a global chess game in a sense. The US and the Soviets trying to out think each other while building their own empires and depleting the resources of the other. Unfortunately other people and other nations were used as pawns, and the effects are still being felt today.

In 1898 the United States annexed Hawaii. Which scenario BEST describes what the word 'annexed' means?
Karo-lina-s [1.5K]

Answer:

b) Hawaii became fully controlled by the United States and lost all self-autonomy.

Explanation:

The word <u>"annexed" means to put or take over control of some weaker or smaller nation by a larger power by force and take it under their power</u>. This allows the greater power to wield authority over the governance and control everything, making the native power redundant.

When the United States annexed Hawaii, it controlled everything and took power from the monarch. <u>Hawaii became a part of the United States, fully controlled by it</u>. The island also <u>lost its self-autonomy</u>, meaning the United States made all rules and laws, and the leaders of the island and their power or authority is useless.

Thus, the correct answer is option b.

Which of these reforms were part of Truman's Fair Deal plans for America? Check all of the boxes that apply.
WINSTONCH [101]

<em>You didn't provide the list of options, but from a copy of the question that I've seen elsewhere, here are the items I think you're looking for:</em>

Correct boxes to check:

  • supporting equal rights
  • creating federal housing programs
  • ensuring civil rights
  • raising minimum wages

Further details:

President Truman outlined his Fair Deal" in a speech delivered in January, 1949.  He proposed that Congress work on:

  • - Expanding Social Security
  • - Increase minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour
  • - Implementing anti-discrimination policies in employment
  • - Addressing civil rights issues
  • - Expanding public housing
  • - Providing federal aid to education
  • - Providing federal assistance to farmers
  • - Establishing national health insurance

There were more proposals as well, but most of the proposals (including most of those noted above) did not gain any traction with Congress.  Congress did extend Social Security coverage and raise the benefits, and also did raise the minimum wage.  But other proposals did not go into effect.

In the movie Thirteen days, how quickly could that quarantine on cuba have turned into war
chubhunter [2.5K]
Any quarantine of a sovereign state can turn into war fairly quickly, especially when the country in question has deep alliances with other, perhaps more powerful, countries.

Explanation:
If the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics<span> had </span>nonappointive<span> to run the quarantine/blockade, the </span>US<span> would have </span>laid-off<span> on Soviet ships. </span>this could are an<span> act of war, </span>and therefore the state<span> would have had no </span>selection however to reply<span>. </span>this could<span> have dragged in </span>each<span> sides' allies, triggering </span>a replacement warfare<span>. And </span>an increase<span> to a nuclear exchange would </span>virtually actually have<span> occurred, as whichever </span>aspect<span> was losing </span>in a very typical<span> war would have had </span>very little selection, however,<span> use nukes or surrender.</span>
