Later, Castro himself led the attack and the invaders surrendered and were imprisoned on April 20, 1961.</span>

Congress was very skeptical of New Mexico and its inhabitants, resulting in them denying the request for statehood in the 1800s. Later, they would go on to be accepted in 1912 as the 47th state.
