The détente was a policy of loosening Cold War tensions. 

Largely associated with Nixon, but continued by Ford and Carter, detente was a policy of greater diplomatic engagement with the USSR with the objective of lowering tensions and the danger of nuclear war with the USSR. Nixon pursued non-proliferation treaties to limit the continued nuclear arms race between the USSR and United States, and opened relations with China in order to motivate the USSR to come to the negotiating table.
