The water in its liquid state is heated by the sun and other sources and turned into vapor. The water vapor has more energy than the liquid water and it rises to form clouds in the sky. The clouds then float, until the water vapor has lost energy, and the precipitation falls in either liquid or solid form (rain, hail, snow) with a lower energy level. This cycle repeats.
