When the princess is discovered with a lover who is of lower status than she is, the king holds a trial where the princess's lover must choose between two doors. One door will have a tiger behind it, and the other door will have a woman who is a worthy match for the man. The princess knows what is behind each door, and when the man looks to her for help, she gestures towards one of the doors. However, the audience does not know which door she tells him to pick. If she picks the one with the woman behind it, it would mean she loves the man enough to let him go and live, even if it is with another woman. If she chooses the door with the tiger behind it, it means she could not bear to see him with anyone else, and decided it was better for him to die. Hope this helps.
