Maps are very practical, they can be specialized in so many ways that globes cannot. Changing the round space into flat space makes them incredibly practical as they can be easily put on a table with other documents where a globe would encumber them. And they are certainly easier to carry around than a globe. Now, the only caveat is that such advantages/disadvantages change when the globe is a virtual image like the one from Google Earth, but that is a different subject.
