What does “It is the emblem of liberty which has Hawaii in the leash” mean?

History

The meaning of the above phrase was that the U.S. was hypocritical when it took over Hawaii.

Opinions about the U.S. takeover of Hawaii

 • The United States always projected the notion that it is a country dedicated to liberty and freedom.
 • When the U.S. took over Hawaii, they were depriving Hawaiians of their freedom.

The saying is therefore saying that the U.S. is the emblem of liberty to the rest of the world and yet put Hawaii on a leash and denied them their freedom which is against the principle of liberty.

Did buddhism "triumph" in china in the same sense in which christianity triumphed in the roman world?
stira [4]
I can't say I know much about the history of Buddhism, but I think I know something about the practice itself. Christianity is a religion of action - a religion that speaks out and acts out. It's a religion that goes to war and asserts itself to gain followers and prove points. From what I understand about Buddhism, it is a 'passive' religion. It is a system of belief that stands on meditation and response rather than reaction. I haven't really heard of any Buddhist groups starting wars, fighting in battles, and singing in victory. Their triumph comes in quiet ways whereas it seems that Christianity triumphed in loud and obvious ways.

Was ww2 actually 2 wars with the same name
grandymaker [24]
No. This was called World War 2 because it was the second war that was held on such a large scale that it encompassed all the great forces of the entire world, from Europe to America to Asia and Australia. Before it was World War 1, which wasn't numbered since nobody expected world war 2 to happen, so it was called the Great War.
