President Marcos called for a snap election where Maria would be the opponent. Despite losing the race, Maria, with the support of different organizations, would oust the president.

Maria's presidency also saw the implementation of the 1987 Constitution that limited the rights and powers of the president, thereby bringing more democracy. She also focused on civil liberties, peace talks to end political unrest in her country and also took on various issues regarding human rights. She died of cancer on August 1, 2009.
