Fish cheeks is a short story about a Chinese girl who has a crush on an American boy, Robert. She feels ashamed of her culture and dreams of being an American girl that Robert would like. At the end of the story the narrator, which is also the main character, realizes the reason why her mother prepared a special dinner when she met Robert for the first time in a family reunion at her house with her family and Robert's family. She appreciated the lesson and the true purpose behind the particular menu her mother prepared, and it was none other than all her favorite foods. It can be inferred that the author feeling toward her mother is admiration, a feeling of respect and understanding toward her mother’s lesson.
