The reason why there may be more thunderstorms in the State of Florida than California is the fact that the state of California is a much smaller state.

The gulf of Mexico is around the area that Florida is located. The areas that are usually closer to moisture and air are the areas most likely to have thunderstorms.

The state of Florida is closer to this area hence the thunderstorms.
