The first person he encounters at Ingolstadt is Krempe, a professor of natural philosophy. This meeting is described as the work of an evil influence the "Angel of Destruction." At first, the narrator is indifferent to the idea of returning to science: he has developed a deep contempt for natural philosophy and its uses.
