A pronoun is a word used in a place of a noun . Pronouns are used to avoid repetition of nouns . They are , we can say , substitutes for nouns .

Read the following sentences :

 • Lisa met jennie in the garden . Micheal invited jennie to a coffee. Jennie agreed. Michael brought jennie home . Michael and jennie took coffee .

 • Michael met jennie in the garden . He invited her to coffee. She agreed. He brought her home . They took coffee .

The words he , she and they in the second sentence are used in place of nouns - Michael, jennie . Such words are called pronouns .

Hope it helps~
