He was responsible for doubling the size of the United States by successfully brokering the Louisiana Purchase. He also founded the University in his home town.In his will, Thomas Jefferson freed five slaves, all members of the extended Hemings family: John Hemings, Joe Fossett, Burwell, Madison, and Eston.
