If I were to do a short story I would definitely make it either funny or sad. For comic use bathos. Bathos is the break of an anti climax. Excellent piece of humour in that technique John f Kennedy used it in one of his most important speeches. Understatements or overstatements are also good. Also use self-deprecating humour
