Fredrick's mother died when he was very young. His father was white, and due to his mother's death, he was orphaned. He'd hardly known his mother because they did not live together and she could only visit him at night.

Slavery. Fredrick Douglass was born into slavery (his mother was a slave, and as for his father, he was most likely his mother's slave owner). Douglass was sent to Baltimore to serve Hugh Auld at age 7.

The 18th Amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol. It was pushed by Protestant women who were largely opposed to Catholic immigrants, who consumed alcohol at a higher rate than their Protestant counterparts.
The racist and ill-advised Amendment was repealed with the 21st Amendment.
