On January 24, 1848 Gold was discovered in California and from 1849 foreigners including Chinese and Americans start trooping into California.

A lot of the foreigners started working in the gold mines.

Chinese immigrants and Latin Americans discovered that many Californians did not welcome them. In 1852, California increased monthly tax on all foreign miners. Chinese and other miners had no choice but to pay this tax so that they can continue to mine gold in California. Chinese workers were the central targets of these attacks in the mining camps. The legal system offered little protection which favored the Californians than Chinese.

A lot of Chinese immigrants continued working in the gold mines despite what was done to them Some looked for another obs, and many started their own businesses. Many Chinese opened their own restaurants and laundries, They became successful.

Therefore, The experiences of Chinese and Latin America Immigrants is that they face racial and ethnic discrimination and were used as scapegoats for others’ failures.
