Joe and Janie move to Eatonville, Florida, which was the first all-black town in America, and the location where Zora Neale Hurston spent her childhood. Janie thinks that she might be happy for the first time. The title comes from a quote in the book which says: "They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God". It basically means that, you couldn't always tell, but people in the book have a spiritual and ever-present knowledge and bond with God. In the novel you can notice that the characters show their identity by how they use English.
