In "Sonnet 18", the speaker is complimenting the person he loves. He thinks that comparing her to a summer day will not be good enough, since she has more and better qualities:

The speaker also says, towards the end of the poem, that the person he loves will never die for she will be immortalized in the poem. As long as people read the poem, she will exist:

"So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
