How can you distinguish between a main verb and a verb phrase with a participle in a sentence?
professor190 [17]

The major way to distiguish a main verb and a verb phrase with a participle in a sentence is to pay close attention to how the verb functions or what element does it modify.

While main verbs express action, participles look like verbs but function as modifiers or adjectives, and they usually end in -ed or -ing.

For example, in "The smiling postman waved at the children", the participle "smiling" functions as a modifier, indicating what kind of postman was "waving" (the main verb expressing an action).

Another example would be "The meal cooked last night smelled good". Here, "cooked last night" explains which meal performed the action expressed by the main verb "smelled".

To conclude, while main verbs express or indicate action, verb phrases with a participle function as adjectives modifying nouns.

Why is Tom Robinson found guilty, even though the evidence clearly indicates he is innocent? To Kill A Mockingbird
oksian1 [2.3K]

Answer:

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is not guilty of anything. He is accused, by Bob and Mayella Ewell, of raping Mayella. But it seems abundantly clear that Mayella and Bob are lying and that Tom is completely innocent of any crime. When Atticus questions Bob Ewell on the stand, he makes it clear to note that Mayella had a wound on her right eye and had wounds all around her neck. Therefore, it would be more likely that someone with two good working hands who is also left-handed was likely to be the attacker. Bob Ewell is left-handed with two good working hands. Tom has only one good working hand, his right, and his left hand is basically useless due to an accident with a cotton gin. Given the testimony and this evidence and the fact that it was well known that Bob beat his children, including Mayella, it is fairly clear that Bob was probably Mayella's attacker and that she conspired with Bob to blame Tom for everything, knowing that a black man in 1930s Maycomb was likely to get convicted in spite of any evidence that might suggest his innocence.

snow_lady [41]

Answer:

okay this would be my answer, and if you cant use this for yourself i hope if could be a good example for your answer!

Explanation:

i would like to play soccer for PSG. i want to choose this career path because ive worked on it from the time i was 3 years old. i still love the sport so much, and for the rest of my life, if i make it or not, i will find a way to be involved in the sport. when i retire i am going to spread awareness for poor youth coaching, and toxic teams because when i was 8 i played for a club with a coach who would use verbally abuse me.
