Late one afternoon, while being chased by the Sheriff of Nottingham into an unfamiliar part of Sherwood forest, Robin Hood and L

ittle John found themselves trapped between a wide chasm and the approaching evil sheriff Fortunately, the sign from the old collapsed bridge was still standing, for it gave Robin the information necessary to plan his escape. The sign said the chasm was 36 feet across. A large tree grew near the chasm. It was the only tree within 50 yards of the chasm Robin quickly paced off the distance from the cliff edge to the tree and found that it was 18 feet. He noticed that the shadow cast by the tree stretched directly across the chasm and that the tip of the shadow just reached the opposite edge of the chasm . Robin hastily measured the shadow created by his 55-inch frame and found it to be 77 inches. Using this information , Rohin calculated the height of the tree. What was the height of the tree to the nearest foot?

The ratio of the height of the tree to the length of the shadow of the tree

is given by the ratio of the height of the frame to its shadow.

Response:

  • The height of the tree is approximately <u>39 feet</u>

<h3>Which method can be used to calculate the height of the tree?</h3>

The given information are;

The distance from the tree to the other side of the chasm = 18 + 36 = 54

Length of the shadow cast by the tree = 54 feet

Height of the frame = 55-inch

Length of the shadow created by the frame = 77 inches

By similar triangles, have;

\dfrac{Height \ of \ frame}{Length \ of \ shadow \ created \ by \ frame} = \mathbf{\dfrac{Height \ of \ tree}{Length \ of \ shadow \ created \ by \ tree}}

Which gives;

\dfrac{55}{77} = \mathbf{\dfrac{Height \ of \ tree}{54}}

Height \ of \ tree = \dfrac{55}{77} \times {54} \approx \mathbf{39}

  • The height of the tree is approximately<u> 39 feet</u>

(2a+b)^2÷(3b-1) when a= -2 and b=5
WINSTONCH [101]
Evaluate (2 a + b)^2/(3 b - 1) where a = -2 and b = 5:
(2 a + b)^2/(3 b - 1) = (5 - 2×2)^2/(3×5 - 1)

3×5 = 15:
(5 - 2×2)^2/(15 - 1)

 | 1 | 5
- | | 1
 | 1 | 4:
(5 - 2×2)^2/14

2 (-2) = -4:
(-4 + 5)^2/14

5 - 4 = 1:
1^2/14

1^2 = 1:

Figure out the pattern, and write the next number.<br> 2,6,21,88
bija089 [108]
Answer:
a5=445

Explanation:
a of n=(a+1)*n
a1=2
I found the pattern to add 1 to the previous number and then multiply it by its number in the sequence. Apologies for the terrible format of my recursive formula.
Proof of pattern:
(2+1)*2=6
(6+1)*3=21
(21+1)*4=88
a5=(88+1)*5=445

STAN walk 10 km to the grocery store. He stops then walks 10 km east back to his house. What distance does he cover? what was hi
Bogdan [553]

STAN walk 10 km to the grocery store.

He stops then walks 10 km east back to his house.

Let us draw this situation to better understand the problem.

As you can see, Stan first walked to the grocery store and covered a distance of 10 km then he came back to the house from the grocery store and covered a distance of 10 km.

So the total distance is 10 + 10 = 20 km

On the other hand, notice that Stan is exactly at the point where he first started that is his house, therefore, the displacement is 0 in this case.

Recall that the displacement is a vector quantity so the direction of travel also matters.

From house to grocery store = 10 km

From the grocery store to house = -10 km

Overall displacement = 10 km - 10 km = 0 km

Therefore,

Distance = 20 km

Displacement = 0 km
