Q) Why is the Assyrian empire taught in school today?

A) It will give you insight into the geography and climatic conditions of the Middle East and contribute to your understanding of the opportunities and challenges of that region. It will present you with a vision of the Middle East at a time when its political and religious structures were very different from today.

Q) What are they most remembered for?

A) The Assyrians were perhaps most famous for their fearsome army. They were a warrior society where fighting was a part of life. It was how they survived. They were known throughout the land as cruel and ruthless warriors.

Q) “Most Assyrian kings preferred to rule their more distant territories indirectly, through client states and puppet kings.” Why do you think this would be an effective way to rule?

A) Assyrians chose a local governor or king to rule under their direction and provided an army to protect the land. HOWEVER, ruling by fear and intimidation caused the people to revolt against the Assyrians and they had to put down many revolts which took extra time/money/resources.
