In this activity, you will write a short story using what you’ve learned from reading Jack London’s "How to Build a Fire" about

wilderness survival.
Part A
Begin your story with an interesting introduction. The introduction contains your story’s exposition. It should describe where you were, what conditions you were in, and what your initial concerns were.

Tip! Use sensory details to illustrate the harsh conditions. Use your initial concerns to set up your story’s conflict.

Answer:

I once hiked on my own in the Alaskan wilderness. My first mistake was waiting until late in the afternoon to head back into town. It was already cold and would only get colder. The cold wind blowing against my face made my skin feel tight and as brittle as fragile glass. I knew every step back to town, but everything looked different covered in freshly falling snow. The woods were quiet . . . too quiet.

Answer:

One time I went on a hike alone in the Alaskan wilderness. The first mistake that I made was that I was waiting until late afternoon to head back into town. It was already really cold and it kept on getting colder and colder. The freezing cold wind kept on blowing against my face. That made my skin feel so tight and feel so fragile as glass. Every step that I took back to town looked so different being covered in fresh snow. I knew that the woods were quiet too quiet.

In the following sentence, what are the two common nouns?
Harman [31]
The correct answer is A. lunches and river.
A common noun is concrete - it refers to something you can touch, feel, something that surrounds you; words such as desk, mirror, rug, are all common nouns.
B is incorrect because those are proper nouns, meaning they refer to the names of people or places. C is incorrect because eat is a verb, and side is an abstract noun. D is incorrect because both words are verbs.

Read this excerpt from "Mad Cow, Furious Farmer."
pshichka [43]

I believe the correct answer is: D. The author humanizes the prion with playful language by saying "[i]f it manages to burrow into a corner."

In this excerpt from "Mad Cow, Furious Farmer”, the example in which the author keepings a lively tone even while discussing a disease is:

"[i]f it manages to burrow into a corner."

As opposed to the terminology author uses (such as: bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)), the informal language of more commonly understandable comparison gives the lively tone to this excerpt, even though he is addressing the serious disease. Other example of this would be: "a little bit squishy and maybe a little bit sticky".
