Bleeding Kansas was in the time of 1854-1859 when it was decided if Kansas was going to be free or slave-owned and there was a lot of violence occurring.

The American militia, while great in number, were ill-disciplined and many contingencies refused to move past American territory into Canada, claiming it was beyond their responsibilities. They generally performed well in their home states and did worse and worse the farther they got from their homes.
