How I Learned English is a narrative poem. The first-person point of view helps the reader experience all of the important details. For instance, the reader can almost see the character Chuck Keller, described with his t-shirt riding up over his gut. Also, familiar words from the game of baseball, such as pop- ups and grounders remind the reader of the joys of being young and playing games. fFinally by using humor to tackle the theme of fitting in the author creates a balance of seriousness and fun that anyone would enjoy.
