Germany replied by destroying ships that were supplying the material. In the end of the war all the submarines the German used impacted the war. German submarines sank a total of 6,394 marines displacing a combined total of 11,948,702 tons. Reciprocating 229 submarines for an average of nearly 52,000 tons sunk per submarine.
