They went to San Francisco, or at least near it, and wanted to make their own city where they could live as they wanted. However, this was a failure because they weren't really earning much and there wasn't much work, so poverty hit them and things like drugs ravaged their societies and the counterculture movement and the hippie movement started to decline.
